I wrote about five destinations in the US I would like to revisit in my last post. Since I’m Canadian, and I’ve gotten to travel a bit within Canada (not everywhere though), I thought I’d write about some places in Canada I’ve technically been to, but never got to see much of. Here are six destinations in Canada I need to revisit.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

In 2009 I went to the east coast to visit a friend, but I made the mistake of trying to do too much in a short period. My trip to Halifax culminated in my friend and I going to the Pier 21 Museum before I had to fly home. I’d love to go back to Halifax and spend more time there, exploring downtown and trying to find the best lobster rolls. It would be great to see The Halifax Citadel or to check out an event like the Halifax Comedy Festival.

I was so rushed during my time in Halifax that this was the only photo I took in the city. Really.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

A couple of years ago I went to Niagara Falls and spent about 20 minutes in the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. While I like Niagara Falls, I really wish I would have spent more time in Niagara-on-the-Lake, which was a beautiful and historic town. Next time I’m in the region I’d like to see all the things there are to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Being a theatre nerd if I went in the summer I’d check out the Shaw Festival, or I could take a tour of some of the region’s vineyards and maybe bring home a bottle of ice wine.

Niagara-on-the-Lake also had some people dressed up in historical costumes, which I kind of love. I don’t know if that’s an all-the-time kind of deal or just happened while I was there.

Prince Edward Island

It might be a little unfair to put an entire province here when the rest of this list is filled with cities and towns, but I want to explain my past stupidity. On the same trip where I saw almost nothing in Halifax, a few days earlier I thought I could do Prince Edward Island in a day. This province is the smallest in Canada, but there’s a lot to see. A day wasn’t enough time. I’d love to go back and see more of PEI, maybe take a seafood tour, check out the fantastic restaurants in Charlottetown, and see the birthplace of Canada at Founder’s Hall. And since I love musicals I would definitely attend the annual Anne of Green Gables The Musical.

The sand at a beach in Prince Edward Island. The red sand fascinated me. It’s so red, much redder than this photo shows.

Regina, Saskatchewan

I’ve been to Regina a few times, when I was little and couldn’t remember it and then when I was older and just passing through. Stopping at Tim Horton’s for lunch and seeing inside the airport doesn’t count as visiting a place. Regina seems like an underrated destination, and I’d like to go back and spend a couple of days there. Maybe I could check out Wascana Park, The RCMP Heritage Centre, see a play at the Globe Theatre, or attend a festival like the Regina International Fringe Festival.

Winnipeg, Manitoba

2013 I went on a road trip from Calgary to Toronto, and I got to spend one short night in Winnipeg. I was pretty tired from driving (was alone) and so the only thing I did was visit The Forks. It was a great area, but it was early in the day and so nothing much was opened before I had to hit the road again. I’d like to go back and see more of Winnipeg. It might be neat to see the Winnipeg Ballet. and I’d definitely love to visit The Canadian Museum of Human Rights (the only National museum in Canada outside of Ottawa).

Canadian Museum of Human Rights. This museum still wasn’t finished when I was in Winnipeg (briefly) back in 2013.

Bonus – Drumheller, Alberta

This is a bonus because I’ve been to Drumheller a few times. This is a small town in the Alberta badlands, an area well known for dinosaurs fossils. Drumheller has a fantastic paleontology museum (The Royal Tyrell Museum) that I’ve been to a couple of times. Aside from snapping a photo of the giant Dinosaur in town, I feel like I haven’t seen a lot of Drumheller. Granted it’s not a big town, but I know there’s more to explore in this area. Since Drumheller isn’t too far away from where I live (about 200km) it’s become one of those, “it’s so close I’ll just go there later” destinations.

Well not for long. My birthday is coming up soon, and I’ve never gone anywhere for my birthday, and while Drumheller might not seem super glamorous, I thought it would be fun to spend a couple of days there. I’m going to take a (short) hiking tour of the region (something I don’t usually go for), but I’m also going to be seeing two shows. Yes, there is live theatre in the region. I’ll be seeing a production of The Wizard of Oz at Rosebud Theatre, and The Canadian Badlands Passion Play, which takes place entirely outside. I’ll be in the region for about 2 days so if you got more suggestions on what I should see or do let me know on Facebook or Twitter or down below in the comments.

  1. Looks like you’ve got some traveling in your future. I’ve only driven through Regina so good to get some ideas of what to do.

Thanks for including my ideas. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a cute town but more than that very community oriented.

  2. I think Regina seems definitely underrated – it doesn’t help most of my family is from Saskatoon and there’s a bit of a rivalry between the two cities. And Niagara-on-the-Lake was so nice, and I definitely can’t wait to go back there and see and experience more of that community.

  3. Yes I did visit Ottawa a few years back. Actually it would be nice to revisit it as well because I was pretty rundown and tired when I was there.
