When I went to Bath last year, I stayed at the YHA Bath Hostel. It was a great little hostel for the few nights I was there, but it was on Bathwick Hill. Staying here meant I had to walk on the sidewalk of Bathwick Hill (alongside the road) to get to my hostel, and walk down the hill to get to the main area of town. Could I have taken a bus or a cab to get to/from my hostel and into the central area of Bath? Sure, but walking up and down a big hill once or twice a day means burning more calories so that you can have more dessert. That’s science.

The other good thing about staying at this hostel was I found the Bath Skyline Walk from the National Trust. I walked up (if coming from the center of Bath) or down (if coming from the hostel) Bathwick Hill to the entrance opposite of Cleveland Walk. If you don’t want to walk this route there is a bus stop by Cleveland Walk. Then I’d follow the marked path to the rolling hills for some nature and views of Bath.

I visited Bath in December so the fields were blanketed with frost when I was here in the morning. You can see Bath Abbey to the right in this photo. While not noticeable The Roman Baths are beside it, and the Theatre Royal is only a few blocks away.
The unique style of Georgian architecture and the Bath stone (a honey-coloured limestone used in many of the buildings in Bath) stands out against the winter skies.
Even in December there’s plenty of greenery around.
After walking down the path to the bottom of the hill you can end up walking beside the canal, which is also really nice.

This was one of those great “I didn’t know about it until I was there” discoveries while in Bath. While I didn’t do the entire Bath Skyline Walk I enjoyed this detour to see some nature and some nice views of Bath. I can imagine this walk would be gorgeous in other seasons, and if I find myself back in Bath I’ll give myself time to do the Bath Skyline Walk again.

Things To Know
Here is a general map of Bathwick Hill. It’s about a mile from the main sites of Bath (like the Roman Baths) to Bathwick Hill. You can also get details for the full 6 mile Bath Skyline Walk here.
While in Bath I stayed in a 6-bed female dorm at the YHA Bath Hostel. While the location was a bit outside the centre of Bath (and involved walking up Bathwick Hill), the hostel was clean and well taken care of. I paid for my own stay here. If you are not on a budget, there are great hotels in Bath that you can book here.

  1. Bath is high on my list of cities in the UK to visit. I think the whole city is a UNESCO site isn’t it? I will definitely take your advice and do the Bath Skyline Walk for a view of the city when I visit. I hope I get a beautiful sunset that day!

  2. The view at Bathwick hill is peaceful. Is keep up with your Photo Friday posts to view other pictures such as Bath. And thanks for the science behind walking to lose some calories and rewarding myself with cookies for such walk. I think it’s more balanced. I’d be encouraged to walk more. ?

  3. I love Bath, and actually wrote an online travel guide about it. However, I didn’t get to see this view from Bathwick Hill, what a shame! Bath is so pretty, and yes, I can imagine even more so in springtime.

  4. Bath is beautiful. But why a picture? You could have been more generous by giving us 5. Now I can only think of Bath and imagine every aspect of it. ?. Let more do of Photo Frlday.

  5. I’d love to see Bath either up close or from a birds-eye perspective! Bathwick Hill looks like a cool place to explore, too! I used to hike a bit on Kauai and all the views from the mountains there are insanely beautiful!

  6. WOW! Gorgeous view over Bath. I only spent a day there a few years ago, but I really want to go back. PS: I love YHA, I have been at many all around the world and despite being a bit more expensive than others, they always offer high-quality stays.

  7. Bath looks like a really amazing and photogenic place. Would definitely check out the hostel, when I happen to take a trip to Bath. Would love to check out the Roman bath as well.

  8. I’ve been to Bath, but sadly didn’t know of this view from Bathwick hill! It just looks spectacular. OMG!!! I feel miserable that I missed the Bath Skyline Walk… Really thanks a ton for this virtual tour.
