My First Time in Canmore, Alberta

The Mountains are a funny thing. I don’t live right next to the mountains, but they are just a 4-hour drive from me, so they’re close enough for a little weekend trip. Despite this the last time I was in the Rocky Mountains in Alberta was back in 2019. I’ve been to the coast more recently than the mountains. I’m not a mountain hiker for the summer, and I’m not a skier or snowboarder, so visiting the mountains in the winter doesn’t appeal to me.
Most people coming to Alberta tend to head to Banff since it’s just couple hour drive from Calgary (we measure distance in time). Some go to the quieter Jasper further north, but with forest fire damage it may take time before Jasper is ready for tourists.
Aside from Banff and Jasper a slightly less known internationally (but still very popular and busy) mountain destination is Canmore. It’s actually just 25km east of Banff, and I had never been to Canmore until last month. My friends were doing a road trip and I met them in Canmore for a couple of days. The weather was gorgeous the afternoon I got arrived. I spent that first day wandering down Main Street, having a Beavertail (iykyk), buying Japanese KitKats, walking the Policeman’s Boulevard, and just vibing. Here are some photos from my time in Canmore
It wasn’t a trip with a lot of doing, which I was okay with. I don’t know when I’ll be back in Canmore but hopefully it will be sooner than 5 years from now.
Things To Know
All opinions in this post are my own. While my friends and I stayed in Canmore we had a private room with 3 beds (1 single and 1 bunk) at the Canmore Downtown Hostel. This was in a great location only a short drive to the main street area of Canmore, and I would definitely stay here again. If you’d prefer to stay in a hotel or a lodge there are lots of accommodation options in Canmore or nearby in Banff. Note: that Banff is in a National Park and you’ll need to pay for a park pass to stay there.
