Musical Theatre Shows I Talk About

Normally I would link to where you can stream the show’s cast album, watch a movie version of it (if it exists) or even get tickets for it (if it’s on Broadway, West End or has a big tour going). I’m too lazy for that right now so I’ll just list the shows I mentioned in the episode (that I can remember). Not all of these are shows I love, and there are lots more musicals I do love (like every musical by Stephen Sondheim) that I didn’t mention.

The Phantom of the Opera
Rent
Les Misérables
Cats
Hamilton
Wicked
Hairspray
Jesus Christ Superstar
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat
Cabaret
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Six
Hadestown
Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.

If you love musicals try to see them whenever you can. But also don’t forget to support community theatre and school productions of these show. They help support local theatre and the arts, fostering creativity and much more. Support theatre and the arts.

Musical Theatre Related Podcasts & YouTube Channels I Love

Musicalsplaining Podcast. Sadly this podcast ended in December 2023, but there’s 5 seasons of episodes and they’re well worth giving a listen

Drinks and a Show Pod. I accidentally called this Two Drinks And A Show Pod in this episode.

Howard Ho Youtube. His videos are always great. Wondering why you’re bawling your eyes out in Hamilton? Check this playlist.

The Musicologist. This is the video about motifs I mentioned. This isn’t about musicals, he usually talks about film scores or classical music, but there is some overlap (not always) between these art forms and musical theatre.

12Tone Youtube. Not musical theatre related but if you’re interested in western music theory it’s an interesting channel. One of my favourite videos is Understanding The Man Who Sold The World.

Wait In The Wings YouTube. I totally forgot to mention this channel in the episode. He does great episodes about specific musicals and broader topics in musical theatre. His episode on the fake Steve Rogers musical (think it was shown in the tv series Hawkeye) is great.

Lindsay Ellis YouTube. As mention this YouTube channel won’t be making new content. Although this channel is mostly about film and filmmaking (and those were really interesting to watch) there are great episode about musicals (usually movie musicals) including this one about Phantom and this one about Rent. Her videos are long usually 30+ minutes, and in depth so if you are short on time here’s a great video I recommend.

Musical Theatre Related Websites I Love

Reddit Musicals and Reddit Musical Theatre. Both subreddits are great places to learn about musicals, get tips (if you’re a performer), and to get recommendations on shows to check out.

Broadway Musical Home. This is a great website with a list of over 300 musicals. The Rights page has information on where to get the rights to put on a variety of musicals. Concord Theatricals and Musical Theatre International are the two main companies to license musicals.

Playbill has a listing for shows (musicals and plays) in New York, London and National Tours.

Today Tix has an App for both iOS and Android. You can use the app to buy cheap, same-day tickets for shows in several cities like New York, London, and more. I’ve used this app in London and highly recommend it.

Use the Code JGZYL to save £10 (or $10) on your first order with Today Tix.

If you’ve read this far thanks very much for listening to this episode, and maybe even listening to an episode or two from the past. You can always go here to listen to past episodes of this podcast, and find resources for the shows I mention (where to listen to the album, see the show if possible, etc).

Have a great day.
