Episode 5 of the Take Me To The World Musical Theatre Podcast is all about the musical Hamilton. I saw this smash hit last year in London and I’ve finally calmed down enough to talk about the show without hyperventilating from excitement. In this episode, I focus on some of the perceptions and biases I had about Hamilton before I saw it.

Resources – Music
This section has links to the cast recordings/soundtracks for musicals that are mentioned in this episode. It also has a couple of musical playlists.
It’s Broadway, Bitch – Deezer Playlist. This has over 1700 songs from different musicals. Albums are in random order. Some songs contain strong language and subject matter; listener discretion is advised.
Sounds of Broadway. This is an online radio station with over 4600 songs from 560 different musicals. The station also has a great weekly podcast about musicals.
Hamilton (2015 Original Broadway Cast)
Hamilton Instrumentals (2017 Original Broadway Cast)
Hamilton Mixtape (2016). Many hip-hop, rap, and pop artists have done remixes and reinterpretations of several Hamilton songs and it’s fantastic.
In The Heights (2008 Original Broadway Cast). This is the first musical Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote/created/starred in before Hamilton and while I haven’t seen it I’ve been to the recording and it’s great. Edit: a movie adaption of In The Heights came out in 2021.
Resources – Video
Here are links from Just Watch (unless otherwise noted) for any musicals mentioned in this episode that have a movie adaptation or a proshot/filmed live stage version. When available, non-musical film adaptations of these shows are also included.
Hamilton (2020 Filmed Stage Movie).
Hamilton YouTube Channel. It has interviews, behind the scenes stuff and performances from past and current Hamilton casts. You’ll also find Ham4Ham performances. These were performances that the cast did for people standing outside to see the show or for the lottery (before the lottery went digital).
Resources – Websites and Apps
Reddit Musicals and Reddit Musical Theatre. Both subreddits are great places to learn about musicals, get tips (if you’re a performer), and to get recommendations on shows to check out.
Broadway Musical Home. This is a great website with a list of over 300 musicals. The Rights page has information on where to get the rights to put on a variety of musicals. Concord Theatricals and Musical Theatre International are the two main companies to license musicals.
See a map of upcoming Concord Theatricals productions here and a map of upcoming MTI shows here. Be sure to move the maps to your area or use the search function to help you.
Playbill has a listing for shows (musicals and plays) in New York, London and National Tours.
Today Tix has an App for both iOS and Android. You can use the app to buy cheap, same-day tickets for shows in several cities like New York, London, and more. I’ve used this app in London and highly recommend it.
Use the Code JGZYL to save £10 (or $10) on your first order with Today Tix.
Hamilton Musical. This is the official website for all the current running productions of Hamilton. The best way to find tickets for Hamilton is through this website. It will redirect you to the right ticket seller, whether that’s through Ticketmaster or through the performance venue box office. Be aware if you use a third-party website or reseller to buy Hamilton tickets they may be fake. The venue has the right to deny you entry if your tickets aren’t legitimate. I’d only purchase ticket through the official website just to be safe. You can also enter the Hamilton lottery on the website or through the app.
Hamilton App that’s available for iOs or Android. Like the website, this is the official app that will let you purchase tickets, but it is also (along with the official Hamilton Website) the only way to enter the Hamilton lottery. You can enter the lottery 2 days ahead of time, which is great. The app also has trivia questions, stickers, and some other fun things for fans.
Have you seen Hamilton? If so what did you think of it? If not would you like to see it?
