While free walking tours can be great they have some downsides, mainly they can be generic and can get busy. Instead you might want to take what I’m calling a special interest walking tour. These walking tours focus on a specific interest, like a food walking tour or a street art tour. The types of special interest walking tours available can vary. For example many places have a food walking tour, but only London has a Jack The Ripper walking tour.

A Special Interest Walking Tour likely won’t be free. You will need to pay to take the tour, and you’ll also be encouraged to tip your guide after. It’s the main way the tour guides make their money. Depending on the tour it may include extras. For example a food walking might include the food itself. Check in advance to see what’s included with your tour price.
Unlike the free walking tour you’ll probably be in a smaller group of people. If group size matters to you then be sure to check the maximum group size before you book. You may also be able to book the tour as a private tour. Just know the price will be higher than a tour open to the general public.
Maybe you’re more independent and a guided tour doesn’t sound appealing. Then you might want to take A Self-Guided Walking Tour.
