If you like being independent and learning things on your own then a self-guided walking tour might be for you. These usually involve downloading an app onto your phone. Make sure you’ll have enough data on your phone for the tour. You’ll check with your phone provider to see if your phone will work at your destination and what it will cost (or you can look into getting an esim if your phone takes that). Charge your phone before the tour, and bring a charger/power bank with you. Some self-guided walking tours are audio narrated. Bring headphones for your phone if that’s the case.

Guided tours have to be booked at specific times/dates. The benefit of doing a self-guided walking tour is you can usually take the tour whenever you want. However some self-guiedd walking tours may have a time limit that begins when you start the tour. Don’t start the tour until you’re ready to take it. If you want to be on a small tour then self-guided tours are perfect. It’ll just be you, and whoever else you’re travelling with.

The downside to a self-guided wlkaing tour is that you’re doing this on your own/with your travel companions. If you don’t feel comfortable navigating in a new destination then a self-guided walking tour won’t be for you. There’s also no tour guide to ask questions or get recommendations. Self-guided walking tours will likely follow a predetermined route. Unless you find a self-guided tour on a particular topic or neighbourhood they can be very general, similar to the free walking tour but smaller in size.

I did a self guided walking tour in Berlin. I enjoyed it, but I personally prefer guided walking tours. This is especially true if it’s a first time visit, which was the case for my trip to Berlin. However; I’d try a self-guided walking tour for a city I’ve visited before, but in a neighbourhood I’m not familiar with.

In the last part of these series I’ll talk about taking A Walking Tour At An Attraction.
