Getting To See The World’s Largest Tandem Axle Truck in Sparwood, BC

This year I haven’t travelled anywhere internationally, but I did visit a few places in Canada, to Saskatchewan (to see family), and around a few places in Alberta. This included a trip to a few places in southern Alberta and the Crowsnest Pass area in June, and a trip to Jasper in July.

I also made an impromptu trip to British Columbia for about 45 minutes when I was visiting the Crowsnest Pass. Why? I wanted to visit Sparwood, BC to see the Titan 33-19, a.k.a the world’s largest tandem axle truck.

If there’s one thing you should know about me it’s that I love tandem axle trucks. Just kidding; I don’t really know what tandem axle means. Thetruckhow.com says “A tandem axle truck has one front axle and two rear axles each with double wheels.” Cool.

What I do love is superlatives; they’re the best. So when I find out some town has the world’s largest whatever I’ll do what I can to see it. I mean within reason. Would I drive 524km from my house just to see the world’s largest tandem axle truck? No. Would I detour 45km from a place I was already visiting to see the world’s largest tandem axle truck?

You tell me. But yeah, of course of course I went. Also this truck was really big, in case you weren’t aware of that earlier.

This truck, the Titan 33-19, stands at 6.8 meters tall, but with the box raised it’s over 17 meters tall. I’m 5’10 and I didn’t reach the tops of tires. It can carry 350 tonnes of stuff. It was built by General Motors starting in 1968 and finished in 1974. It displayed at a Mining Convention in Las Vegas (travelling by 8 railcars) and used in mines in California before being moved to a mining operation outside of Sparwood, BC.

It’s big. It’s green. It’s a mining machine. And by machine I mean a truck – The World’s Largest Tandem Axle Truck to be specific. If you’re ever around Sparwood, BC take a gander to see this massive piece of mining history.

Things To Know

The World’s Largest Tandem Axel Truck is located 124-126 Aspen Drive, Sparwood, British Columbia. It’s located next to the Chamber of Commerce/Visitor Centre. If you see the big green truck you’re probably at the right spot. This is outside and free to visit. I came here in the late afternoon and didn’t really do anything else in Sparwood. Maybe next time I’ll spend more than 10 minutes here.
